Hot on the heels of the Great British Sewing Bee, three people have created a sewing club to make friends and put into practice new and old skills.

Angela Walker, who has been sewing for 50 years, together with Janice Coulson, who has been sewing for almost as long, and Sara Dring who sews for a living, created Newark Sewing Club.

The first session took place this week at the Bridge Centre, Lincoln Road, Newark, and attracted a whopping 30 people.

In the first session, there was a mix of hand sewing and machine sewing from finishing off projects to starting new ones.

"We are hoping that the more experienced members of the club will support and help the beginners and that we will learn new techniques from each other," said Angela.

"We plan to occasionally run workshops both within the club and with external providers and occasionally to collaborate on sewing the same project and maybe later run a craft fair or fabric sale.

"However, the overall response to setting up the club was to meet and make friends with other people who sew."

When a Facebook page for the club was first set up, 40 members joined within four hours.

Angela added: "It felt worthwhile pursuing setting up a club but as we all know social media doesn't translate into reality.

"We held an inaugural meeting with very little notice and were blown away when nearly 30 real people turned up."

The club now has over 130 members on the Facebook page and 44 signed up for email notifications.

The club is set to meet on the first Monday evening and the third Saturday morning of each month. Each session has a cost of £10 and runs based on a pay-as-you-go rather than a membership fee.

People are asked to bring their sewing kit, a sewing/overlocker machine, which must be PAT tested, as well as their fabrics and patterns.

The club provides irons, ironing boards, cutting mats, a spare sewing machine and extension cables.

People are asked to book in advance by [email protected]

The next session will take place on Saturday, June 17.
